Well, the main features of such a rifle are range and accuracy. However, the definition and the characteristics that make a rifle a DMR can be different from one airsoft field to another. So, before you even consider buying a rifle, make sure the airsoft field you plan on joining accepts it. The variables you want to consider are muzzle velocity, firing modes (semi or full auto) and the size and type of field (outdoor or indoor). What Makes a DMR? In the world of real steel rifles, a DMR is an infantry rifle capable of shooting beyond the standard range. Still, in the airsoft world, the most common definition for a DMR is a standard, semi-automatic infantry rifle equipped with high-end optics that can shoot at maximum 450FPS with 0.20g BBs. Considering the features, I guess we can say that DMRs are a hybrid between automatic and bolt action rifles. Now, as most military men and women will say, it all depends on how you use the rifle. After all, you could just as easily get a sniper rifle and use it in a CQB! It wouldn’t be as effective, but you would manage to tag one or two of your opponents. The same goes for DMRs! So, the best way to get a DMR is to make one. This means getting a standard platform that’s already been tested and you know is reliable and improving upon it. Features to Consider for a DMR The features that matter the most are power and accuracy. When you combine them, you get an effective range, which is translated in the maximum distance you can shoot at a human-size target without missing. Next, you have to choose a semi-automatic platform that is capable of shooting at about 440FPs with .2 BBs. Now, to be able to hit a target out of the standard range, you will need a good scope, with variable zoom and at least 2X power. However, since you won’t be in a fixed position, the rifle and all its accessories shouldn’t be too heavy (about 10lbs max). Other features you must check before calling your rifle a DMR are trigger response, magazine capacity (higher than 250 BBs), and hop-up functionality. All in all, the features I mentioned above (and the ones required by your airsoft field) pinpoint to a rifle that’s a bit more expensive than the standard. However, since the role of Designated Marksman should never be afforded to a beginner,…
